HISTORY

MayStar was created in 2002 when May got together with Josh Enomoto of Paredyme to make a song to enter into UCSD's "Singing/Talking Tree Competition." (UCSD is home of The Stuart Collection, a collection of art that is spread out all over the campus and includes a Talking Tree and a Singing Tree which are artifical eucolytus trees hidden amoungst real ones. One tree plays music, the other errily spews out poetry into the forest.) Josh provided a stripped down version of one of his songs, and May turned a poem she had written into a song and sang it over Josh's music. The end result: the song that so many of you love: God. Unfortunatly, the song was never entered into the contest. It was a minute too long and Josh had flown to Japan and was unable to edit the song in time. Wanting to start a band anyway, May added the song to MP3.com and the response was good so she starting making more music with her boyfriend, Chris Rogers. Their first songs, (Americans and De De De Da,) were made and recorded together with an acoustic guitar. Their later stuff was created in a more unusual way. Chris would record bits of guitar on the computer. Days, weeks, or even months later, May would find the music files, add lyrics, and record. The two were asked to play many shows, but never having played or practiced together, they were completely unprepared. Despite May's numerous attempts to get Chris to practice, they never even practiced once. Tired of waiting for something that was never going to happen, May begin working with Jeremy Mundy in the summer of 2004. They recorded one song together, then fell out of touch. Work and school interfered. May continued recording songs with Chris. September of 2005, it all came together at last. May finally started working with someone as dedicated to music as she was, Abe DeLeon. A friend of a friend, May used to go nearly every week of the spring in 2004 to see Abe DJ at a local dive bar. Sometimes they'd dance together for a minute. But they become real friends when May and Abe both found themselves ticketless at a sold out Modest Mouse show, trying to find a way in. May suggested they try looking for a way in on the roof. Abe was on the 20 foot high roof within minutes. May was in love. They finally got in by putting money in the pay phone coin return for a security guard to retrieve later. Their friendship was going great, but Abe stopped DJing and they fell out of touch for nearly a year. Finally May, determined to see her long lost friend, stole Abe's number out of a mutual friend's cell phone that had been left at her house. Abe was happy to hear from May and they slowly started to hang out again. Three months later they decided it would be perfect to play music together. Abe had always wanted a girl to sing to his music, and May thought Abe's band, The Verso was pretty good. Within two practices, they had already come up with complete songs, including the still to be released "Who are you?" May had never been comfortable singing in practice with anyone before, but the chemistry between Abe and May was perfect for making music, and she was suprisingly un-shy about singing in front of Abe. Abe, a dedicated musician with good values, was just what May needed for her band. Not only was he extremely talented, but he was also reliable and responsible; qualities not found in many musicians these days. Abe would always make sure they practiced. He would call May repeatedly when she didn't feel like answering her phone and drag her out of bed to practice. A perfectionist and in love with music, May would make Abe practice with her for 8 hours at a time until all hours of the night. The two, equalily excited about their band, are currently getting ready to record their EP and plan to begin playing shows shortly after.
